Frequently Asked Questions

How is a CUC different from a university campus?

CUCs are local support hubs, not universities themselves. Your local CUC partners with YOUR university (whichever Australian University you are enrolled in), or vocational education provider, to help you succeed in your studies while staying in your community.

Our Centre is not linked to any one university, we support students from all higher education institutions including vocational education providers.

What facilities and services do you provide?

At our Centre you will find

  • high-speed reliable internet
  • computers you can use at the Centre
  • docking stations to bring your own device link to our dual screens
  • quiet study spaces
  • group study areas
  • printing and scanning
  • free WI-FI
  • video conferencing
  • kitchen amenities
  • academic skills support
  • support with understanding and using your education provider’s systems

Our Centre is a welcoming, safe  inclusive and productive space to achieve your study goals and connect with other local students.

Who is the centre for?

All higher and vocational education students. All ages. If you are enrolled in higher or vocational education or exploring your higher and vocational education possibilities we are here for you.

If you are already enrolled in any Australian university or Registered Training Organisation for vocational studies. Simply register with us and you can use the Centre to study online or externally, and treat the Centre as your academic base.

If you are enrolled to study on campus at UTAS you can register and use the Centre for study outside of your on-campus contact hours.

If you are interested in further education but not sure where to start or have not studied for a long time. Come and visit us during business hours to find out more about your future study possibilities.

How do I register and access the Centre?

Anyone interested in higher education can visit CUC Eastern Tasmania in person at 48 Cecilia Street St Helens during business hours.

You can register to gain full access to the CUC Eastern Tasmania Centre and services if you are over 18 and completing:

  • a university course
  • a pathway program for entry into a university course
  • a vocational course with a Registered Training Organisation
  • in secondary school and planning to go onto higher education

Students who meet these requirements and are under 18 years of age can (by negotiation) register and access the Centre during staffed hours with a parent or carer’s permission.

Simply fill in the form to express your interest. We’ll get in touch to complete your registration with you. You’ll need to provide proof of enrolment in a course and your USI, a photo ID and complete an orientation at the Centre before gaining after hours access.

Once registered, you’ll receive your personalised access to the Centre 7 days a week. After hours opening times are coming soon.

Does it cost anything to use the Centre?

No, our services are completely free.

What type of academic support is available?

Other similar centres provide support that includes one-on-one sessions, workshops on academic writing and referencing, and help with time management and study strategies. We will develop and provide our academic support as we find out more about the students who register with us.

Will I meet other students?

Yes if you want to! We foster a sense of community through student events, workshops, and a shared study environment where you can meet and collaborate with others.

Can I access the Centre outside of business hours?

We know that your best time for dedicated study might not be during business hours. After-hours access is available for registered students. Once you are registered we will provide you with your own personalised after hours access.

Our after hours times are coming soon.

Do you offer courses?

CUC Eastern Tasmania is a Regional University Study Hub. We do not provide courses directly.

We can help you choose from many different courses and support you to access a wide range of higher education providers. Students might study 100% online and use the Centre to access their course. Students might commute to attend some of their classes in Hobart or Launceston and use the Centre as a quiet place to study. Other students do a mix of online and face-to-face study.

We can look at courses from different providers that suit your interests, career goals, study preferences and work and family commitments.

We do offer workshops to support you to develop and hone your study skills.

Can I bring my own laptop or device?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own device. We have dual screens you can dock to. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the Centre.

Is there tech support?

Yes, our Centre Manager and staff are here to help with any questions you have, whether it’s logging in, printing, or navigating the portal and systems of your education provider.

We also have access to IT support for our computer systems.

Can you host my exam?

CUC Eastern Tasmania can host and supervise exams for universities and other exam providers. We can provide an examination space and invigilation services. Contact us with enquiries.

I'm not sure higher education is for me or don't know where to start. Can you help?

Yes! This is one reason we are here! We know that university study and vocational study can be very rewarding and bring many benefits. It can be daunting working out what might be the best choices for you. With so much choice you might not even know where to start.

We will help you discover your options and we offer very practical information to help make decisions and choices. We can support you in many ways if you decide to apply and enrol. We don’t provide careers counselling or other forms of counselling but we can direct you to services that do.

We are co-located with the Regional Jobs Hub Break O’Day Employment Connect (BODEC) meaning both study advice and job seeking advice are available in one location.

I'm already studying and really struggling. Can you help?

Yes! We’re here to help with practical advice. We know that uni can be very challenging, but we also know it is helpful to speak to someone face-to-face.

We are due to be open later this year. In the meantime we encourage you to reach out to the support services of your education provider. You can find a list of Education Provider Support Services on our Current Students page under Student Wellbeing and Support.

You can also contact us for a friendly chat with our Centre Manager.

Our Centre will be open later this year and then you can book a time to meet to face-to-face too.

Can you attend my event, school, workplace or community?

Yes! CUC Eastern Tasmania staff can support education and career expos, and other programs and events that showcase educational opportunities. We can also present to students or staff and visit workplaces and communities across Eastern Tasmania. Please get in touch to find out more or invite us to your activity.
